John Hamilton

Thank Your Lucky Stars, 2003

Little Bear Press

Over the years, John Hamilton has produced some of the world most recognizable still photographs cronicling the western. But h still felt as if there were so many uncaptured moments. “Like the tim when John Wayne was running toward the camera and tripped in gopher hole and his toupee fell forward; it looked like a spider crawling across his forehead. Then there were the times when would see Steve McQueen working the punching bag between take of "The Sand Pebbles" (1966), then gorging himself on chocolate cake. But Hamilton was always aware of the loyalty to his subjects. “Sure could have gone on shooting ,” he said, “even when my subjects wanted me to stop. I could have sold the shot. Then that would have been the end of it. I would never be able to establish a rapport with that actor again, let alone set foot on the set. Sometimes being able to freeze the frame in your own head is all that counts.” Thank Your Lucky Stars: John Hamilton is hard-cover, 172 pages, with 13 duotone plates. Limited edition first print run.
